Mathura, 2019.04.15 (VT): In the run up to Lok Sabha Elections 2019, Bollywood superstar Dharmendra campaigned for wife and BJP lawmaker Hema Malini in the Jat-majority regions of Braj on April 14.
Before starting the day, Malini shared a picture of the two of them together on twitter. She wrote, “Today is also a special day for me! Dharamji is here in Mathura to campaign for a whole day on my behalf. The public is waiting eagerly to get a glimpse of him & listen to what he has to say! A photo taken in my house in Mathura just now before we leave for campaigning…
Addressing election rallies in Sonkh, Baldeo and Baajna, the veteran actor stated that Hema Malini is deeply attached to Braj, and she is looking forward to serving the land and its people once again.
Appealing to the voters in ‘Sholay’ style, he said, “Gao walon, Hema ji ke liye vote karna, Nahi to kisi tanki pe chad jaunga aur wahan mausi ko pukarunga. Bahut mausiyan aa jayengi. (Dear villagers, please vote for Hema Malini ji. Otherwise I will climb on one of the tanks and call out for Mausi ji(s). Many will come).
Dharmendra had a brief political stint from 2004-09 as a BJP MP from Bikaner, Rajasthan. While campaigning for Hema Malini in Braj he shared that “he was unable to do as much work as she has done in the last five years.”
In the 2014 general elections, Malini defeated Mathura incumbent Jayant Chaudhary (RLD) by 3,30,743 votes. Amid criticism, she has defended her record as a parliamentarian saying she worked extensively for Mathura, visiting the town over 250 times in the last five years.
Home Minister Rajnath Singh also addressed a public gathering for Hema Malini in Chaumuha where he praised the former actress for her work in the constituency. Singh urged people to vote for Narendra Modi in the interest of the country’s stability and progress.
The Bharatiya Janta Party has won four out of six Lok Sabha elections since 1991 in Mathura.
