Vrindavan, 2020-01-30 (VT): The 40-day Holi festival of Braj started today on the occasion of Basant Panhcami. Pursuant to the (spring) season’s vibrant and healthy spirit, Vrindavan’s Banke Bihar temple is using Thakurji’s ‘prasadi’ garlands/ flowers for making bright and completely natural (chemical-free) colours for Holi.
The special ‘gulaal’ which is blessed by Thakurji will also be delivered to people’s homes on demand. Efforts are on to enable online orders through e-commerce websites such as Flipkart and Amazon before Holi.
Tonnes of flowers are used every day in Vrindavan’s Banke Bihari temple, some as ‘shringaar’ for the deity and some as offerings made by devotees. On special occasions colossal ‘phool banglas’ (flower mansions) are also erected.
Recycling these flowers not only protects one against the offence of discarding them disrespectfully, but also provides many sustainable and natural alternatives to products such as colours, perfumed oils and incense/dhoop sticks. Besides, it is also a source of income for the destitute widows of Vrindavan. The old, mostly Bengali, widows of ‘Aashray Sadan’ in Chaitanya Vihar are engaged in the recycling process these days.
Before being distributed to people, the recycled flowers will complete their journey when they are offered again to Thakurji as ‘gulaal’ this time.
