Barsana, 2019.05.14 (VT): Taking umbrage at the building of a public canteen on Brahmanchal Parvat, saints broke the wall of the under-construction structure on Monday. As the situation began to spiral out of control, one person had to be arrested.
Clashes broke out when the police tried to explain matters on behalf of the Working Committee. The working committee’s junior engineer has recorded his statement detailing the episode with the Police.
The canteen, the proposal for which was put forward by BTVP, is being built near Ladliji Temple by Barsana Udyan Vibhaag (Gardens Department). This is not the first or only construction on Brahmanchal Hill, which is home to Jaipur and Maan Mandir among other structures. Jaipur Mandir also runs temporary canteens on the sacred hill.
The saints are pained to see the hill being dug up and constructed on. The hill is most revered and is considered to be a form of Shri Brahmaji who has come to Braj to witness Krishna Lila. The saints wish that only temples and the most necessary buildings should stand on the hill.
On Monday, prominent religious figures including Swami Krishnananda, Madhusudan Das, Rajaram Das, Manohar Das, Odiya Baba, Savottam Das etc, reached the scene along with some women and broke the canteen wall. Govardhan SDM Nagendra Pratap Singh, BTVP’s Pankaj Varma (DCO), and Police force from the Govardhan and Kosi station had to be rushed in to quell the ensuing commotion. Hapur resident, Tarun Garg was taken into custody.
After much wrangling, work was resumed under the supervision of the Police, even as saints sat doing Kirtan nearby.
Commenting on the situation, SP (rural), Aditya Kumar Shukla said “the canteen is being constructed for the convenience of pilgrims. Half of the saints protesting against it have constructed illegal residences on the hill. All these matters will be investigated.”
District official Nagendra Kumar added that the “saints of Barsana and Govardhan and the locals are not involved in these protests. These are people from outside who have no skin in the game. People of Barsana will not put up with such bullying. ”
Lakshman Prasad Sharma, ex jail officer, remarked, “The purpose of these said saints, who are responsible for maximum encroachment on Brahmanchal Parvat, is to dictate the terms of development in Barsana, but that is for the residents to decide.”
