Barsana, 2019-09-10 (VT): As part of Shri Radha Krishna’s ‘Boodhi Lilas’ which are an important element of Radhashtami Celebrations in Barsana, ‘Choti Bandhan Lila’ was enacted at Sankri Khor yesterday. During the ‘Lila’ Shri Radha and the Gopis tied Shri Krishna and his friend Mansukha by their hair knots (choti) to a ‘Dhau’ tree for stealing their butter.
The day began with ‘Makhan Chori’ (butter stealing) Lila at Nagaji ki Kunj. After celebrations at Nagaji’s Baithak, Ladliji Mandir, and Nagaji’s Raas Mandal, Shri Radha and Krishna were carried by the devotees on their shoulders to Sankri Khor where the ‘Choti Bandan Lila’ was enacted under a ‘Dhau’ tree by Birjan Swamiji’s Raas Mandali.
Gopal Sakhi, Baba Ananat Das, Sanju Diwakar, Sonu Gaur, and Bhsuan Shastri lent support to the organisation of the ‘lila’.
According to Ladliji Mandir sevayat Sanjay Goswami, when ‘Choti Bandhan Lila’ is enacted in Barsana, people from Nandgaon avoid going there out of fear that ‘Barsanawasis’/ Gopis will tie them to the trees. He says that this traditional heritage shared by the people by Nandgaon and Barsana is rooted in Shri Radha Krishna’s divine love.
The ‘Choti Bandhan Lila’ reminds one of Shri Krishna’s ‘Damodar Lila’ where mother Yashoda binds him to the mortar (ukhal). Through these pastimes the Lord, who severs the mortal coils of all beings, demonstrated that he can be bound only by unalloyed ‘Bhakti’ (devotion).
