Mathura, 2020-02-23 (VT): Prior to US President Donald Trump’s Agra visit on February 24, Padma Shri and veteran Braj litterateur, Shri Mohan Swaroop Bhatia has raised objection to the performance of Shri Radha Krishna’s Raaslila as a mere exhibit on the streets for his welcome.
Along with other programs that have been planned at regular intervals throughout movement of the President’s cavalcade form the airport to Taj Mahal, Raaslila will also be showcased on the roadside. This, according to Shri Bhatia, is being insensitive to the religious and cultural sentiments of Brajwasis who revere the Raaslila and those who enact it as manifestations of the divine.
“The culture department is engaging artistes who would be dressed as Radha Krishna to depict Braj culture on the roadside when the VVIP cavalcade will move on Agra roads. This is an insult to Braj culture and has led to resentment among artistes”, he said adding that it would have been better had the performance been respectfully organised in an auditorium.
The divinities Shri Radha and Krishna are worshipped by millions not only in Braj, but across the world. When the Raaslila performers take on their forms, even they are seen and worshipped as divine, with people falling at their feet and offering ‘bhog’, aarti’ etc to them.
“We carry the ‘swaroop’ (forms) of Radha Krishna on our shoulders, but here they will be made to dance of the streets for entertaining the guests. This is sheer mockery of our devotion and beliefs. It is disturbing to see the ‘maryada’ (decorum) associated with Raaslila being junked so casually,” lamented Shri Bhatia.
