Mathura, 2019-10-01 (VT): The municipal corporation has launched a helpline for collection of single-use plastic in Mathura. After finalising the timing and other details, helpline numbers (0565-2503632 and 9193785784) were issued for the campaign which will be commencing on Oct 2 with a public awareness rally.
The ‘Run for Plastic Awareness Rally’ will cover a distance of approximately 3.5 km from Civil Lines to Vikas Market in Mathura. The municipal corporation has set a goal of collecting nearly 15 tonnes of plastic waste on this day.
It is hoped that the campaign will discourage single-use plastic usage. Once the awareness stage is over, the plastic that is collected till Oct 7 will be converted to fuel, said Joint Municipal Commissioner, Ajit Kumar Singh.
Fines ranging from Rs 1000 for 100 gram plastic to 25000 for 5Kgs will be imposed on collection requests post Oct 7. Educational institutions will also have to pay a fine of Rs. 1000 for late collection.
Singh further informed that a dry-waste recycling plant will be inaugurated on Oct 2 in Vrindavan (Maant Road). The plant can convert 5 tonnes of plastic waste to fuel every day Thus, it can recycle waste from nearby Panchayats in addition to that from Mathura city. According to reports, a material recovery centre will also be set up at the same place next month.
